Year One Home Learning Challenges 21.1.25

Dear year one,
Due to a burst water pipe school will be closed today. We hope you are staying safe at home.
Please see below for a list of home learning challenges you can do today.
Phonics
In phonics we have been learning the spilt vowel diagraphs a-e, i-e, e-e, o-e, u-e.
Practise saying known GPCs use the sheet provided during the previous parents evening to help. (One will be attached below). Focus on practising your split vowel diagraphs.
Practise reading and writing the words continuing split vowel diagraphs:
made, game, same, time, fine, theme, athlete, these, code, dome, cube, rule.
Tricky words
practise reading and writing the foloowing tricky words:
mouse, again, house, there, their, our
Read the sentence:
These athletes will win the games.
Now cover the sentence and practise writing it. Remember to use your segmenting fingers to help!
English
Many of our families were without water yesterday and today. Think about why water is important and discuss with you family.
Make a list of all the different ways we use water and how it helps us every day.
Make a poster to explain the importance of water and bring to school to share with your class tomorrow.
Maths
We are continuing our topic on Place Value looking at numbers up to 20.
Challenge 1:
Write your number bonds to 10. Now can you write your number bonds to 20. Remember to use a systematic approach.
0+20=20
1+19=20
2+18=20
Challenge 2:
write the numbers to 20. Write your numbers to 20 both forwards from 0 to 20 and backwards starting at 20 all the way to 0.
Can you practise writing your numbers as words?
Start at zero, one, two, three all the way up to eighteen, nineteen, twenty.
You might need help with some of the spellings.
Science:
In science we are learning to group animals into the five main animal groups: mammal, reptile, amphibian, fish and bird.
Write the animal groups and make a list of different animals that belong in that group
bird - robin, chicken, ostrich
fish - shark, stingray, clown fish
mammal ...
reptile...
amphibian ...
Can you remember any facts about why animals belong to a certain group?
Mammals are covered in fur or hair.
fish lay eggs
amphibians live on land and water.
Draw a picture of some of the animals you have named. How can you find out what they look like?
